In this talk, the speaker highlights the glorious culture of Vijayanagara Empire under the reign of Krishnadeva Raya (1471-1529) when the empire is believed to have reached its zenith. The speaker informs us that the Vijayanagara kingdom was characterized by the amalgamation of the Brahma-Kshatra spirit or the scholar-warrior alliance which was present in every great and long lasting Hindu kingdom. In his talk, the speaker throws light on the artistic, social and cultural life of the Vijayanagar empire by drawing from three major Telugu works, namely Aamuktamaalyada, Manuchatitramu and Parijaatapaharanamu. The speaker describes the high standard of life enjoyed by the common man as evident from the intelligent design of homes, the elaborate bathing rituals, the exotic dresses and jewellery worn by both men and women, the high quality of perfumes, the enormous variety of flowers and the healthy eating habits of common citizens. On the whole, this talk captures the general conduct of Krishnadeva Raya’s citizens and narrates how under the patronage of the great king a vibrant culture flourished.
